Most of us can’t wait until the 2019 Ranger gets here. The legendary truck is scheduled to return in the first quarter of 2019 and will be produced her stateside. However, Ford is already looking ahead to the truck’s next major redesign in the mid 2020’s, and if the rumors we’re hearing are true it may be getting some help from a brand not known for its trucks – in America, at least.
A few months ago we reported that Ford and Volkswagen had signed a joint venture to cooperate on future commercial vehicles and trucks. New rumors suggest that the two companies could be co-developing the next Ranger due out in the 2020’s. This could also lead to Ford producing both the Ranger and Volkswagen-branded Amarok side by side here in America.
The Volkswagen Amarok has been well-received in Europe where its primary competitors are not American trucks, but Japanese ones. With a resurgence of the mid-size truck segment in America, Volkswagen has been looking for ways to strengthen its truck tech and sell the Amarok in the American market.
While it’s all speculation at this point, a Ford-Volkswagen truck partnership could prove valuable to both companies. Ford brings to the table decades of truck knowledge and manufacturing experience, as well as an American manufacturing plant. Volkswagen, on the other hand, brings small engine tech, as well as expanded sales channels in Eastern Europe, South America, and China.
We’re excited to see where this partnership leads!
